The Causes Of Stress - When Does It Turn Harmful?

in Stress
Stress is part of our daily life. It is talked about in the media, homes and offices around the world. A little stress doesn't hurt and can be beneficial, but too much can cause ill effects on you and your body. What are the things that cause stress and what are the things that aggravate stress and make it harmful?

Stress can be caused by numerous risk factors. Risk factors are factors that predispose an individual to stress. There are a number of stressors that can cause this stress such as life events, daily hassles, and such. However let's focus on two of them namely major life events and daily hassles.

Firstly take major life events, such as marriage, birth, death which can contribute to stress. While birth and marriage is a major change in life and it can motivate or inspire you to achieve more for the sake of your child and spouse, it is a major factor that can contribute to stress. The breadwinner is struggling to sustain the family on their income. This kind of struggle can lead to problems like violence, divorce and etc.

Marriage and birth is a major life change and requires many sacrifices and adjustments to be successful, and if they cannot handle these struggles then stress kicks in. On the other hand, death, especially of an immediate family brings despair, grief and even depression. If the sufferer cannot cope with this, there is a high possibility of stress that could lead to psychological disorders. For example, some women who have lost a baby could develop postpartum psychosis.

Depression is normally seen but psychosis is another thing. Such condition can be prevented with support systems like family. There is a higher incidence of psychosis in those who do not have support systems to help them out with their problems. Therefore, one way of managing stress is seeking advice from others.

Daily hassles are usually regarded by people as inconsequential little stressors compared to a major life event. Research has shown that if people cannot handle these daily issues they are more susceptible to diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure and such. People who do not handle their daily stresses will have a cumulative effect of stress on the body.

Being stressed prompts your vital organs into overdrive and due to constant exposure to stress, your organs, especially the heart, works a lot harder thus increasing wear and tear and eventually, your organs get tired and might even stop, leading to cardiac arrest.

No matter how small the stress may be, it is necessary for us to manage it properly to avoid future problems. Think about it, you do not have to live a stressful life.
