Three Tips to Relieve Work Stress

Work can be stressful and when you go home, you want to enjoy your evening as much as possible. In these difficult economic times, it can be hard to even find relaxation when you are home. Even after a stressful day at work, you have the stress of worrying about losing your job or you are overwhelmed by the extra work you have to do because of co-workers who have been let go. You don't want to complain, but after awhile the stress of work can wear, you down and you can have a hard time relaxing even at work.

It is important to keep your stress under control. If you allow your stress to build up it can lead to physical symptoms such as headaches, upset stomach, high blood pressure, chest pains, sexual dysfunction and sleeping problems. Stress can also cause a number of emotional problems such as depression and panic attacks. Stress has even been found to be linked to health conditions such as heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide.

If you find yourself worrying about your day at work on the way home, then start using your evening commute as a way to transition into stress relief mode. When you revisit your problems from the workday it is as if you are reliving each of them and each time you think about the event you are magnifying the stress you original felt.

Consider the following three tips to help you relieve your stress after a hard day at work. This transition process can help you close your stressful day on a positive note and help you have a more enjoyable evening. However, you may want to practice these in the parking lot before leaving for work on when you get home in case you need to have careful attention when driving home during rush hour traffic.

First, you want to start by taking some deep and cleansing breaths. Breathe deeply and fill your lungs with oxygen. Hold them for a comfortable count of either four or five and then slowly exhale. As you exhale, imagine yourself relieving the stress from the day. Repeat this three to four times and you can easily feel the tensions slipping away and you'll know you are ready to move on to the next step.

Second, concentrate on what went well. Even on your most stressful days there has to be some positive events. Mentally consider everything that went positively, not just the major thinks. This will help to put you into a positive frame of mind. Stay with these positive feelings as long as possible or until you start to feel better and more relaxed. Then you are ready for the final step.

Lastly, you need to ask yourself what you learned during the day. There is always something you will learn from an experience. Avoid negative talk and judgments that are based on anger. Instead of replaying events that you don't have control over, focus on what you learned since this puts you back in control and on a positive tract of healthy growth.
